MOST INSTRUMENTS
require tension to create music. Guitar strings pull taut against straining wood necks. Piano soundboards are made out of heavy metal to combat the forces of multiple-strings-times-88-keys. Drum heads are stretched over the edges of shells that are themselves trying hard not to crack under the pressure.
THE ACT OF MAKING MUSIC
is an exercise in creative physics. Playing in an amplified band means torturing the air around you, making it vibrate and buck and writhe. It's pretty sexual, really. To do this, you must interact with Laws: put into motion objects at rest, squeeze sustained activity from said objects as they try to return to their resting state. Every pick on a guitar string or hammer on a piano string or stick on a drum skin is a violent agent, a tool being used to wring beauty out of the simple, pervasive forces that rule everything in this universe.
